This course focuses on the basics as well as the processes/work flow. The seminar follows a product (electronic ignition, front-end loader) through the Release, BOM, Request for Change and the associated processes. Excercises are included and many questions asked to encourage participation. Emphasis on subjects you choose.

1 - INTRODUCTION - The critical / strategic nature of the discipline

2 - MANAGING DOCUMENTS

  • Drawings, Specs, Parts Lists, Source Control & Spec Control
  • Design Document Formats, Pitfalls and Signatures
  • Document Types, What doesn't belong on drawings
  • Document and File Control, what are the minimum requirements

3 - IDENTIFICATION

  • Product, Model, Part Numbers, Serial Numbers
  • Date, Lot, VIN, Batch and Release Numbers, Change Tracking Mods
  • Significant / Non Significant Part Numbers, the Ideal Part Number
  • Marking/not marking parts, major modules, PCBs and end items
  • AVL/QVL/approved sources

4 - INTERCHANGEABILITY / SPARES

  • Interchangeable Defined, Practical Discussion
  • Rolling Revs & Part Numbers - when / when not
  • Spares, What is important

5 - BILLS OF MATERIAL AND DATA BASES

  • Populating the MRP/ERP system files
  • The item master file
  • Data Dictionary, Group Technology / Class Codes
  • BOMs, Accuracy, Where Used, Content
  • CAD/PLM/PDM Single Database, Single Structure, Minimum Levels
  • Modular BOMs, Spares BOM, Manufacturing and Engineering Views
  • A discussion of practical product/BOM structuring

6 - PRODUCT / ITEM / DOCUMENTATION RELEASE

  • The proper use of cross functional teams in releases
