Testimonial
Date: April 21, 2008
Dear Frank,
Inertia Switch would like
to thank you for some of the best wisdom regarding configuration
management. We were recently awarded several quality awards and
received our IS9001 and AS9100 certification last month. A majority
of our audit revolved a great deal around design and development
control. We received 100% scores in these areas resulting from
techniques we used in your book. We are an old but newly managed
Aerospace company serving the world. Some customers are NASA,
Lockheed, Airbus, Boeing, Raytheon, and Sikorsky. All of these
companies have accepted our methods and most have commented that
they wish their system was as simple. We feel confident that
your "good logic" will continue to grow our company
for many years to come. Again many more thanks from all of us.
Best Regards,
Brian DiGirolamo
Vice President, Chief Engineer

Third Edition Preface
The wide acceptance
of this book has been very gratifying. This work seems to have
taken on a life of its own. The publisher wrote; "Your book
over the last year has resulted in the most 'Buy This Book' links
of our entire catalog
It is very well received by the
'Googleites'." Sales have exceeded 10,000 at this third
edition writing. Why? While management fads come and go, buzz-word
programs abound, software acronyms and software applications
ebb and flow, the basics of engineering documentation control
remain the same. The writer thinks of himself as "the Vince
Lombardi of document control." Basic blocking and tackling!
When the publisher asked for a third edition, it was therefore
difficult to think of ways to add value. Some restructuring,
editing and much clarification has been done. The index is improved.
New chapters on the Supply Chain and on Implementation are combinations
of new material and consolidation of information that was scattered
elsewhere in the book.
Whether you think of this subject as Engineering Documentation
Control (EDC) or Configuration Management (CM), it needs to be
recognized as a key business strategy. The wall or gap between
Engineering and the rest of the world has existed in many companies
too long. The "throw it over the wall" syndrome can
be overcome. It is prevalent in new product releases, bills of
material, change request, and change processes. Simple, make
sense, fast, accurate, efficient, measured and well understood
Engineering Documentation Control/Configuration Management can
tear down that wall - bridge that gap.
Considerable emphasis is placed on the speed of the processes
in recognition of the high cost of slow reaction time. It presents
the premise that quick release of new product documentation and
the ability to change the documentation and the product quickly
is critical to a company's profitability.
Product documentation is discussed. What data should / shouldn't
be on the documents is covered. Numbering / identification /
interchangeability are thoroughly discussed. Design team / concurrent
engineering concepts are integrated into the suggested release,
request and change processes. Emphasis is placed on accuracy
and value of the processes. Ways and means of reinventing the
processes are explored. Rules are developed with reasoning given.
Bill of material content, structuring and maintenance are all
thoroughly discussed. The generic processes are flow diagramed.
Development of simplistic standards and audit of the system against
those standards is covered. The multitude of benefits of having
a fast, accurate, well documented and well understood system
are analyzed.
