Second Edition Review
The acceptance of this book has been very gratifying. When the publisher asked for a second edition, the writer was flattered and anxious to make substantial additions. Those additions are scattered throughout the book. Many experiences with client consulting have been added without reference to client names. Interchangeability and Change Cost have been made separate chapters in recognition of their critical importance. A new chapter - "Benchmarking / Surveys" has been added.
The control of engineering documentation is a critical discipline in any product manufacturing company. It is sometimes called Configuration Management (CM). This book covers the subject on a generic basis that is usable by any product manufacturing company.
Many companies have a "throw it over the wall syndrome" for their new product releases and product changes. A gap has developed between design engineering and the rest of the corporate world. The book develops ways for the EDC / CM discipline to bridge that gap / tear down that wall. It recognizes that too much control can stifle the engineer's creativity while too little control can lead to chaos and costly results.
Considerable emphasis is placed on the speed of the processes in recognition of the high cost of slow reaction time. It presents the premise that quick release of new product documentation and the ability to change the documentation and the product quickly is critical to a company's profitability.
Product documentation is discussed. What data should / shouldn't be on the documents is covered. Numbering / identification / interchangeability are thoroughly discussed. Design team / concurrent engineering concepts are integrated into the suggested release, request and change processes. Emphasis is placed on accuracy and value of the processes. Ways and means of reinventing the processes are explored. Rules are developed with reasoning given. Bill of material content, structuring and maintenance are all thoroughly discussed. The generic processes are flow diagramed. Development of simplistic standards and audit of the system against those standards is covered. The multitude of benefits of having a fast, accurate, well documented and well understood system are analyzed.
